Experience entering Þríhnúkagígur volcano in this unique adventure
In the land of fire and ice, it is hard not to avoid the looming volcanos that sit prominently in Iceland’s landscape – with the Inside The Volcano excursion you will be experiencing an adventure like no other!
The trip is not for the faint-hearted and is also recommended for those that keep reasonably fit as first you will have to hike up to an hour to the location before then getting geared up to descend into the volcano. You will then head down roughly 120 meters (400 feet) and your method of being dropped into the crater is via an open cable lift.
Once inside you can marvel at the interior of Þríhnúkagígur (its translation means ‘Three Peaks Crater’), a volcano that last erupted 4000 years ago, as you learn about your surroundings with your guide.
The tour operates from mid-May to October and does not operate during the winter – there are options to get to the crater’s entrance by helicopter and also options of private tours are possible too. Just speak to our Adventure Artists to find out more.
