Whales and Dolphins of Pico

The Atlantic Ocean becomes even more magical around the 9 islands that make up the Azores, better, brighter and bluer with beautiful wildlife swimming below.  Cruise around the secluded area of Pico on a luxurious, exclusive boat. Marvel at the beautifully clear water surrounding you and take in the sea breeze as your journey out on the water.  Jump in, and see the multicoloured world beneath the surface. Keep your eyes peeled for the friendly whale and dolphins that are renowned for being in the Azores, with more than 20 different species of cetaceans to find!  

For whale watching in the Azores there are some year-round resident species but the months between March and September are best but each month is slightly different. Choose your month and then try to spot these species!

• March – See the Blue Whales as they migrate through the island chain
• April/May – See Baleen Whales pass by on their migration route as well as Blue Whales, Fin Whales, Sel Whales and the Humpback Whale.  Don’t forget to look out for the dolphins playing in the waves!
• May/June – The master of deep diving, the Sperm Whale, can be seen during these months along with the arrival of the Atlantic Spotted Dolphins.
• July/August – Both the dolphins and the sperm whales begin to give birth to their calf, see the baby Sperm Whales at only 4 meters long!  See if you can spot the mysterious Beaked Whale…
