Christmas in Scandinavia is a very special time. The snowy landscapes and dark nights simply add to the wonderful festive atmosphere that you will feel as soon as you arrive.
Christmas in Sweden starts properly with Saint Lucia Day which is a ceremony which takes place on December 13th. The day is celebrated with candlelight and candlelit processions. The oldest girl in a family always portrays Saint Lucia by wearing a white robe and a crown of candles. Lucia buns are served with coffee or mulled wine and traditional church services are held where choirs sing hymns about Saint Lucia.
From this day onwards (and a bit before!) everyone is in the Christmas spirit enjoying winter activities, Christmas lights, traditional festive foods such as gingerbread, gravad lax, Christmas ham and of course glogg.
One Swedish city which is particularly festive and really worth a visit during the Christmas season is Gothenburg (referred to as Sweden’s Christmas city). With its 700 Christmas trees and 5 million Christmas lights it doesn’t do things lightly! Gothenburg is home to Scandinavia’s largest Christmas market which has lots of lovely craft and gift stalls as well as the opportunity to try some of the aforementioned festive food treats. The city also offers other Christmas treats including choirs and an ice skating rink.
