For many, travelling to see the Northern Lights is a once in a lifetime experience to bask in the majesty of one of the worlds’ greatest natural wonders. While we do everything we can to take all of the stress out of booking and planning your Northern Lights holiday, it is still important for you to make sure you bring all the right things with you on your trip.
To help you make sure your northern lights trip is a resounding success, we have put together a ‘Northern Lights Kit List’ that includes everything you will need in order to stay comfortable while you enjoy your holiday.
Northern Lights Holiday Kit List
All of the essential equipment that you need to take on your Northern Lights Holiday.
Essential Equipment:
Thermal Socks and Underwear:
Cotton won’t cut it here – it absorbs too much moisture and will ultimately make you colder. Stick to wool and other thermal materials.
Hiking Boots:
For any trek into the wilderness, you will need a set of hiking boots that are sturdy, waterproof and have a thick sole to insulate from the ground. Invest in woollen insoles for extra comfort.
Hat, Mittens and Scarf:
Use these to keep your extremities warm – or opt for a balaclava as an easier choice. Make sure you bring proper mittens and not just fingerless gloves!
A Strong Outer Layer:
Your outermost layer should be both windproof and waterproof. A good quality down jacket is a perfect choice to ward off wind and water while keeping you warm.
Swimwear:
No, really. Despite the cold, if you intend to bathe in any of the geothermal pools in places like Iceland, you will need to take suitable swimwear.
Head Torch:
A hands-free torch will save you lots of trouble when you go Aurora hunting in the dark. Choose a red light so as not to ruin your night vision and don’t forget some spare batteries!
Camera:
Make sure you take your camera so that you can preserve all of your aurora memories – and make sure it has lots of memory/film!
The Big Travel Secret
Dress in layers! You can’t just throw a thermal jacket over your street clothes and expect to stay completely warm. Make sure you have multiple layers of thermal clothing across both the top and bottom of your body. Wool really is the best choice here; it will keep you warm in winter and cool in summer.
DON’T FORGET
Last but not least, don’t forget all of these conventional travel essentials:
- Passport
- Airline Tickets
- Travel Documents – itinerary, insurance, etc
- Full driving licence – needed if you want to drive a snowmobile
- Money – in the correct currencies
- Chargers – with the correct adaptors
